The lecture-performance Rehearsing Rhizomatic Rice Relations builds on a private journal that the Japanese-Swedish and Iranian-Canadian artist duo kept, exchanging their passion for slow food practices rooted in their cultural heritage. For this work, they singled out rice not only as a food staple in their home countries but also as a hyperobject that binds micro and macro relations across nature, culture, politics, economy, science, and technology. The event intermingles intimate passages from the journal with research conducted on rice during the residency at Cité Internationale des Arts while showcasing acoustic and material experimentations they have done on rice. Throughout the performance, artists aim to engage the audience’s senses towards building a performative-sensory environment engaging visual, auditory, olfactory, and gustatory registers.
